ColumbiaColumbia was the first 12 Meter to defend the America's Cup. She
was built at the famous Nevins yard for the 1958 Cup defense. Although 19 years old at the
time, Mike Vanderbilt's Vim was then the fastest 12 sailing, and
provided the springboard for Sparkman and Stephen's winning design. Close competition in
the defender's trials with legendary sailor and auto racing champion Briggs Cunningham at
the helm prepared Columbia for an easy win over the British
Challenger, Sceptre, in the first America's Cup in over 20
years. Columbia, returned to Newport from southern France in
'97. She now sports teak decks and a gracious, comfortable interior. Classic 12 Meter Charters |
